Hearing Experts Address Common (Mis-)beliefs in Mythbusters Series
Hearing loss impacts more than just the patient experiencing the hearing issues. Evidence shows that treatment outcomes are better when family members are involved; however, there’s a low percentage of family and friends actually brought in to the hearing healthcare process.
A group of hearing health industry experts selected by Phonak is on a mission to provide evidence-based recommendations on how to better engage family members in a series of papers to be published on The Hearing Review website.
The series addresses common misbeliefs about focusing on a family-centered care perspective as a means of increasing the value of services and the uptake of hearing devices. Two parts of the series have already been published:
- “Mythbuster Myth #1: I Would Like to Do More Counseling but Time Just Won’t Allow It” addressed a clinician’s main concern that family-center care would require more time than he/she could spare.
- Building on the first article, “Mythbuster Myth #2: I Will Be Expected to Be a Marriage Counselor” tackled what happens when a spouse/partner is included in the appointment and relationship issues are discussed.
Review these articles to get a better understanding on how you can help your patients and their family members become more involved with the hearing healthcare process together.
The first Mythbuster was also published in the January issue of Hearing Review. Look for additional Mythbuster myths to be added to The Hearing Review throughout the coming months.
